It sucks that it is now on the horizon, the death of the ICE. I understand and agree with the reasons for it, just hate to see it finally happen. When people like Chevrolet are talking about electric crate motors, it’s hard not to believe fossil fuels are not long for the automotive world.

Kinja'd!!!

Even Aston Martin is getting in on this. The idea is to give the classic cars the ability to be driven in areas where internal combustion engines have been banned.

The future will undoubtedly be fun, but it makes me sa d for what I’ve had and loved for so long.

Eventually ICE cars will become an insignificant source of pollution (in some regions they already are ).

By then they will become an expensive hobby, restricted to certain places, and with hefty fees.

Don’t worry, everyone seems to be piping in recorded V8 sounds to substitute, at least until the last of us old farts dies off. :|

Our kids will grow up hot-rodding their electric motors. Gloved hands stripping insulation from radially located brush-less electrics, so they can rewind a different gauge of copper wire . Books in the workshop on magnetic theory. Rat-rod AWD conversion Priuses sitting under tarps by the shed, bought for $100 from some salvage yard. Industrial transport motors in pieces slowly built, waiting to be shoehorned where it shouldn’t. The future looks bright!

ICE will never truly 100% die until electric vehicle technology is extremely compact, and battery technology improves capacity without necessitating extremely rare materials that drive up the cost exponentially.

The problem with EVs, as it stands, is that battery tech itself is the limiting factor, especially in the case of lighter vehicles such as motorcycles where you’re only getting a third or even a fourth of the expected range that you’d get out of an ICE.

It will be more than likely that medium ICEs (i.e. most passenger vehicles) will disappear to be either completely replaced by an EV platform or with a electric + small ICE generator system. Motorcycles will more than likely still have ICEs into the foreseeable future. Large pulling vehicles will more than likely still rely on an ICE for primary movement with electric motors providing their instant torque wherever necessary.

Saw that. Tech is advancing fast. Makes me sad, but it’s inevitable.

Within a generation the ICE will probably be gone. At least as an option for new cars.

That’s it folks! Save up all the ICE cars. Just have an ‘02 Civic and a ‘06 Outback? Doesn’t matter!

In 3 generations, your great grand kids will be billionaires!!!!!!!

(Okay, so the cars won’t be worth as much as today’s billions. Its just that inflation will be a real bitch in the future)

Not going to really be a revolution until fuel cells take off IMO. Batteries are shit.

That said, apart from the lack of V8 noises, I’d love an electric crate engine I could drop into my truck.

And my 1971 GMC Van with the straight-six will still be running.

Banned. I didn’t see that coming. But I certainly see humans having to relinquish control of their cars to some “system” in crowded city centers. That only makes sense and if you don’t have an appropriately equipped car, then you’ll have to take Uber.

And when you said “beginning of the end,” I hoped you were referring to the Trump presidency, but alas... (I know you prefer talk of cars to talk of politics in this space. I’ve been struggling of late to contain myself. I do like cars...)

I really want to drive an electric car for my commute.  It makes sense, and all the recent climate reports are worrying, more than they were, which i didn’t think possible.

I think you’re close on your prognosis, but missed the cost factor, especially for commercial purposes.

Once large fleets, such as FedEx or UPS or Walmart can realize a real cost savings, then they will switch to EVs.

On the consumer side, the value proposition needs to improve. Currently, I can go to my local Chevy dealer to look at a Bolt EV, or an Equinox CUV for $10k less. If that were flipped, and recharging an EV was as easy as refueling a gas vehicle, they would be selling Bolts so fast that they couldn’t stock them.

Yeah, I ended up dancing around the cost thing. I guess I assumed that with the mention of battery tech being expensive I thought I was getting at that.

I know that fleets already put down some cash for the Tesla Semi (if it doesn’t disappear into vaporware,) so they’re definitely exploring their options for EV vehicles - being able to cut out the maintenance and fuel costs would make shipping via 18-wheeler much more economical.

The fleet proposition is an interesting one, and it varies depending on usage.

For 18 wheelers, drivers need to log 10 hrs of downtime after 11 hrs of driving . In that case, they don’t need quick recharging. All they need is a truck that can operate for a full 11 hr shift on one charge , and then recharge during their 8-10 hr downtime. The infrastructure needed for this is basically just charging ports at truck stops and rest areas.

A UPS or FedEx truck has a different usage scenario. Since they are stop-n-go all day instead of highway driving like an 18 wheeler , an EV should work much better for them. They also are usually parked in the same place every night, so they would need charging ports installed at the FedEx or UPS facility, much like they have fueling now.

Trucks already have charging ports at resting areas, they’re designed to power the truck’s electronics while the driver rests. It wouldn’t be too much of a leap to turn them into high-power charging systems that can top up the battery while the driver sleeps.

Yeah, with delivery vehicles, EVs are definitely suited for the stop and go situations far more than an ICE. If anything, an EV would be a better choice for package trucks like the ones UPS fields, as the instant torque would help them move more quickly from a dead stop, and with an AWD/4-independent- motor system, would let them more easily handle rougher terrain (e.g. steeper dirt driveways) that they seem to struggle with.

Only downside is the amount of juice used for heating. That wasted byproduct is dearly appreciated 4-5 months a year
